Meet ITEC: Alice Brayley

Henry Bevan, August 15, 2019

Alice Brayley, Laser and Digital Print Manager at MailaDoc, part of the ITEC Group, reveals how she makes sure ITEC's mail meets customer demands...

Who are you?

My name is Alice, and my role is to manage all the paper presses. It’s quite a varied role -- it’s not just printing, I do quite a lot of finishing as well. The main presses we’ve got in there, for example the iGen, we run nonstop, so most of my day is keeping those running 100% of the time. Also, I am looking after the finishing of the jobs, so guillotining -- everything needs to be cut to size -- also creasing, folding, envelope printing.

Where are you based?

I work for MailaDoc in Bridgwater, Somerset

How does OfficeMail, MailaDoc’s Hybrid Mail Service, impact your job?

As a customer, you have a print driver on your PC. You press print, and it comes to us. I essentially have a little website that tells me who sent what. I then release that job, it goes onto our server and from there I release the job onto the correct press -- mono goes to mono, colour to colour. It’s a very simple process and we’re saving time and money for customers. It’s just like any other job, we can impose it, print it.

How long have you worked at MailaDoc?

Over two years, but I’ve been in this role for just over a year. It’s very active, lots of running about. This is a very hands on job, which I absolutely love. It keeps me engaged much more than sitting at a desk all day could.

How did you end up working for MailaDoc?

Originally, it was a bit of pot luck. I was in Retail at the time and I was looking to change into a job I could actually stick at. I didn’t really know much about the company when applying, but thought it sounded quite interesting. Then, the interview clinched it for me. It was very friendly, the kind of interview that tells you that this is the company you want to work for, somewhere I want to be.

What’s challenging about your role?

We’re growing exponentially and we’re getting more and more jobs in. It’s a case of: how do we order this? How do we best meet customer expectations. There are several collections throughout the day, so a big part is, what’s going out in that van? Can I get it out in that van? The biggest challenge we have is just getting the workload we have out the door.

How has working with ITEC impacted your day-to-day work?

When I first started, we were busy but we weren’t this busy and I think since ITEC has been pushing more work our way, we have a bigger variety of print jobs which keeps the team on our toes. We're also slap bang in the middle of the ITEC offices so we get to meet more customers. They come in and get to see what we do here. It's always great to show people what we do and I think the customer comes away with a better understanding of MailaDoc and gets excited about the potential we offer them.

What do you love about your role?

I can’t pick anything specific! Honestly, hand on heart, I love every bit of job role. I love that it’s varied, some days I’m running a lot of envelopes through the machines, other days I’m doing a lot of finishing. It’s never the same thing two days in a row. I enjoy the fact that I can come in one day and be doing something different. I’m never clock watching, something I’ve done a lot in other job roles. Here, I’m like: Oh my god, it’s five o’clock!

What did you want to do when you were younger?

I wanted to be a History teacher. Growing up, I had a really fun teacher when I was at junior school and they inspired me. Then I hit sixth form and didn’t want to go to university so that plan went straight out the window.

Is there a fun fact no one at MailaDoc knows about you?

I suppose nobody knows I’m a massive nerd for archaeology. I can talk for hours about Stonehenge. I’d probably bore someone to death, but I can go on for hours.

Did you watch a lot of Indiana Jones as a child?

(laughs) No, I think it links back to my love of history. My bookshelf at home is full of books about archaeology, ethnoarchaeology, current digs -- not Time Team. Time Team is ridiculous. Digs aren’t as exciting as people think. They’re lots of hours in the dirt with a trowel. No booby traps!
